How to use restorative practice in your school

This time, the topic of the week is How to use restorative practice in your school.

 



In this week’s episode, Paul explains what restorative practice is, how it relates to resorative justice and how it can be used as a powerful behaviour tool.

Whether you are a Pastoral manager, teacher or pupil, this technique can transform behaviour, restore and – crucially – improve relationships. Restorative practice is in use in schools, academies, further and higher education settings and can be equally effective in each. For maximum effectiveness, the following six questions should be used in all restorative meetings. They are often made highly visible, for example on teacher lanyards, in student planners and on posters around the school:

  1. What has happened?
  2. What were you thinking at the time? (Class teacher and child)
  3. Who has been affected by the actions?
  4. How have they been affected?
  5. What needs to be done now to make things right?
  6. How can we do things differently in the future?
