Teaching behaviour and 1-to-1 mentoring – PP5

This time, the topic of the week is teaching behaviour and 1-to-1 mentoring.

This week, Paul covers a huge amount! After mentioning the concepts of ‘Ready, Respectful and Safe’ which he has been working on this week, we move on to the importance of self-reflection which needs to be actively taught to many pupils. It is not enough to assume pupils can ‘do’ self-reflection automatically. Paul outlines the techniques used in a lot of Japanese schools known as ‘Naikan self-reflection’. The US site http://www.todoinstitute.org/naikan.html has full details of the scheme. The process relies on three questions:

 

  1. What have I received from other people?
  2. What have I given to other people?
  3. What troubles have I caused?

 

Paul also outlines the basics of 1-to-1 mentoring and how to start, including a little about anger management and the essential consideration of who should mentor whom and why. This relies on great mentor training and Paul explains the usefulness of being explicit about not only what the old routines were but also what to replace them with. He often illustrates this with ‘wheels’ which can be displayed on the wall with numbered points on them. The destructive wheel and the new wheel can then be referenced in normal class activity. The old behaviours reduce and are increasingly replaced with the new ones.
We also talk about a voicemail we received this week asking for advice on a rapport and relationship project in one school and we discuss a tweet about routines becoming stale and pupils becoming complacent.
