Jake Chandler: Digital Marketing Officer

This week’s blog post is written by Jake Chandler, our Digital Marketing Officer. Read on to discover what he believes is the best part of his job here at Pivotal….

Since joining Pivotal in 2015, the best thing that I have found as part of my job involves the online courses. Whether it is updating, creating new content for our clients, or assisting users with any issues that they may have on the platform, every aspect of my involvement is varied and diverse. I enjoy this aspect of my job more than anything because it allows me to have discussions with users of the online courses regarding the content of the course, and to hear feedback on their experiences. Hearing how users have improved their classroom atmosphere or changed their teaching practice as a result of taking the online course makes everything we do at Pivotal worth it.

During my time at Pivotal, the online courses have gone through quite a transformation. Originally, the courses were called ‘Taking Care of Behaviour’, which were slowly crafted into a more robust and specific set- ‘The Five Pillars of Pivotal Practice’:

  1. Consistent, calm adult behaviour
  2. First attention to best conduct
  3. Relentless routines
  4. Scripted interventions
  5. Restorative follow up

The Five Pillars allow our users to have more freedom on which specific parts of their practice they would like to refresh or improve on within their classroom- such as dealing with best conduct, or being relentless in their routines. Users can take one course at a time, or all at the same time, depending on their needs. However, we recommend completing pillar 1 first, as this builds a strong foundation for the others, and allows the user to create an authentic practice. There are also advanced courses on Managing Extreme Behaviour and Safeguarding Level 2.

The Pivotal Pillars of Practice online course is designed to be suitable for teachers in Primary, Secondary and FE, Teaching Assistants, Cover Supervisors and other practitioners working with children and young people. If you are interested in any of our online courses more information can be found here: Pivotal Online Courses
