Why Positive Relationships Matter

Hurrah, you’ve survived to the end of the academic year! The last few weeks of term are a chance for winding down (or up, if you’re very excited about the start of the school holidays!) and to take stock of everything you’ve achieved with your students this year. Here at Pivotal we strongly advocate building positive relationships (of course, with limitations relating to Safeguarding), both around the school and inside the classroom.

Oxford Dictionary definition of a relationship is:  (1.2) The way in which two or more people or groups behave towards each other.

So why do positive relationships matter? 

When you reflect back to your own school days, there are often a handful of teachers you remember, for a variety of reasons. There are those who have gone out of their way to help you, listened to you- those who you were excited to learn from. And then there are the odd one or two who you remember feeling they treated you unfairly, sometimes singling you out and causing embarrassment.

Paul Dix states that “Relationships that are worthwhile take time – there is a ‘drip, drip, drip effect'” (taken from the Pivotal Podcast PP36; the Importance of Relationships)

There are many benefits to forging positive relationships for the well being of both staff and learners alike. A topical thread at the moment is the focus on Mental Health. Generally speaking, forming healthy relationships is very beneficial in a number of ways. These relationships provide us with empathy, compassion, the ability to form rapport, trust and understanding. Behaviour and relationships go hand in hand, and for educational professionals this creates a welcoming learning atmosphere if done right in which both parties and learners can thrive. For the more vulnerable or Early years children, forming positive attachments is crucial for development. This is where Pivotal comes in. Creating a consistent classroom routine offers stability and a safe environment for social and emotional learning, encouraging a sense of belonging.

Creating a charter of learning for the whole school, sharing learning outcomes, expectations of behaviour and setting goals that are practised consistently can transform the culture of your school environment. Displaying positive recognition boards, sharing a #hotchocfri once a week and praising those who go over and above or sending a positive postcard home strengthen and maintain that contact. This is why positive relationships matter.
